Inaugural Hall of Fame Class to be Inducted at the Gala
From the Desk of Marty O'Neill
The Oxford Dictionary defines fame as the state of being known or talked about based on your notable achievements. If we jump to the next level of deduction, then a Hall of Fame must be a gathering of high achievers. Earlier this year, and in preparation for the 40th Anniversary celebration, a number of alumni felt it was time to start our very own gathering of high achievers: a Hall of Fame. To kick off the process, Mike and Henry Posko along with Rachel Priddy asked a small group of alumni to develop the Mission, the nominating process and the induction criteria. Myself, Meredith McAlister and Brian O’Meara formed the initial working group and began researching other rugby Halls of Fame, other sports Halls, what criteria we’d use for entry, and how often we’d enshrine members. We also gathered a list of potential candidates for the first class. We spoke with at least forty former and current players and collected their thoughts on a fair process as well as prospective nominees.
With the interviews complete, the data collected and hours on the phone navigating strong and informed opinions, we concluded that the Mission of the Severn River Rugby Hall of Fame is to celebrate the history of the club, honor the men and women of notable achievement, and inspire a future that will preserve the legacy of Severn River Rugby.
There will be an Inaugural Class of Inductees and then a Nominating Committee will be in place for future inductions that will consist of Hall of Famers, Member of the Alumni Association Board as well as a representative from both the Women’s and Men’s sides. Those inducted in the first class will be from the first 20 years of the club’s existence.
Induction criteria will be based on notable achievement for 1) Play on the Pitch, 2) Administrative and/or Coaching contributions, 3) Supporting Role and 4) Tenure with the Club. We’ll publish all the gory details of the process after a few more rounds of editing. Our overall objective is to live the Severn River Rugby Hall of Fame’s mission by celebrating the history of the club, honoring the men and women of notable achievement, and inspiring a future that will preserve the legacy of Severn River Rugby.
Thanks to Mere and Brian as well as the alums and current players who shared their knowledge and thoughts. The dialogue made for a better product. We’ll see you at the 40th!
