SEVERN RIVER HONEY BADGERS

Established 2006

Our History:
The journey for the women’s team began in the summer of 2006, when Meredith McAlister, Chelsea Renoe, Sherri Korpella, and Kirk Wiggins—affectionately known as the Golden Girls—founded the Severn River women’s rugby team. In the early days, they practiced alongside the men’s team and scrambled to gather enough players for 7s tournaments on the weekends.

In the fall of 2006, they were able to recruit enough players to field a full squad and compete in their first fall 15s season, under the guidance of Coach Kirk Wiggins. Chelsea Renoe served as captain for the inaugural team, while Meredith McAlister took on the crucial task of creating schedules, agendas, and itineraries. Recognizing the importance of having a voice on the club’s board, McAlister became the first woman ever elected to represent the women’s team. This laid the foundation for the continued growth and success of Severn River’s Honey Badger’s program.
